Intentionality Versus Constructive Empiricism

چکیده
By focussing on the intentional character of observation in science, we argue that Constructive Empiricism—B.C. van Fraassen’s much debated and explored view of science—is inconsistent. We then argue there are at least two ways out of our Inconsistency Argument, one of which is more easily to square with Constructive Empiricism than the other. 1 The Inconsistency Argument We shall argue that there is a tension if not an inconsistency between B.C. van Fraassen’s well-known view of science, Constructive Empiricism (CE), and his less well-known view on intentionality. In this opening Section, we collect a number of premises (mostly from CE) and expound an argument in favour of the inconsistency of CE that will set the stage of this paper; then we provide an outline of this paper. The distinction between observable and unobservable concrete objects (events, processes, facts) is one of the conceptual pillars of CE. For one thing, the doxastic policy of CE to believe only those accepted propositions of science that are about F. A. I. Buekens Tilburg University and University of Leuven, K. Constructive Empiricism And Modal Nominalism
James Ladyman has argued that constructive empiricism entails modal realism, and that this renders constructive empiricism untenable. We maintain that constructive empiricism is compatible with modal nominalism. Although the central term ‘observable’ has been analyzed in terms of counterfactuals, and in general counterfactuals do not have objective truth conditions, the property of being observ...
متن کاملEmpirical Adequacy in the Received View
I show that the central notion of Constructive Empiricism, empirical adequacy, can be expressed syntactically and specifically in the Received View of the logical empiricists. The formalization shows that the Received View is superior to Constructive Empiricism in the treatment of theories involving unobservable objects or functions from observable to unobservable objects. It also suggests a fo...
متن کاملMarc Alspector-kelly Constructive Empiricism and Epistemic Modesty: Response to Van Fraassen and Monton
Bas van Fraassen claims that constructive empiricism strikes a balance between the empiricist’s commitments to epistemic modesty – that one’s opinion should extend no further beyond the deliverances of experience than is necessary – and to the rationality of science. In ‘‘Should the Empiricist be a Constructive Empiricist?’’ I argued that if the constructive empiricist follows through on her co...
متن کاملSchlick/Hong Qian and van Fraassen: Two Different Perspectives on Causality and Quantum Mechanics
Hong Qian’s doctoral thesis discusses Moritz Schlick’s interpretation of the causality principle. This interpretation is based on Schlick’s understanding of quantum mechanics and on his conviction that quantum mechanics strongly supports an empiricist reading of causation in his sense. The present paper compares the empiricist position held by Schlick and Hong Qian with Bas van Fraassen’s more ...

Moritz Schlick’s interpretation of the causality principle is based on Schlick’s understanding of quantum mechanics and on his conviction that quantum mechanics strongly supports an empiricist reading of causation in his sense. The present paper compares the empiricist position held by Schlick with Bas van Fraassen’s more recent conception of constructive empiricism. It is pointed out that the ...
